James Halliday Reviews – Wine Companion 2019

James Halliday Wine Companion 219

The wines for James Halliday’s 2019 Wine Companion have been tasted and the results are in. Our 2016 Awakening Chardonnay received an exceptional score of 98 POINTS which firmly places it amongst the finest chardonnays in the country.

98 Points – 2016 Awakening Chardonnay

The soaring intensity and precision of the wine obliterates any comment about the oak. It is one of those uncommon chardonnays, that demands you give it time – the more the merrier. Grapefruit is the masthead, but it gathers around it a suite of flavours that keep its energy and drive on track. To 2034

96 Points – 2014 Awakening Cabernet Sauvignon

Laden with Gold medals, this bottle incites heady expectations! Thankfully, it doesn’t disappoint. Graphite, cassis, pencil lead and bouquet garni set the aromas alight. A sinuous, mid-weighted frame. Bay leaf and black olive confer a more savoury chord. The oak serves as a conduit for the intensity of fruit, dishing up a gentle bit of roughage across the finely wrought beam of grape tannins. Will age well.To 2029.

94 Points – 2015 Senses Cabernet Merlot

An 81/19% blend matured in new and used French oak for 18 months. Fragrant blackcurrant/cassis aromas set the compass for a medium-bodied wine that has a delicious stream of cassis and plum running down the middle of the palate with no need to even think about interference from tannins. To 2030.
